September is Disability Employment Awareness Month in British Columbia — a time dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and recognizing the incredible talents and contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace. It’s also an opportunity to highlight the employers, organizations, and communities that are opening doors to meaningful employment and reimagining what inclusion looks like at work.
This year, our partners at Inclusion BC shared an inspiring story from the District of Saanich. What began as a conversation about inclusive employment turned into a transformative experience for municipal staff, who stepped forward to become mentors through the national MentorAbility program. MentorAbility connects job seekers with disabilities to short-term, career-focused mentorship opportunities, building confidence, exploring career pathways, and strengthening networks. For Saanich staff, it was not only a chance to share their expertise but also a meaningful way to learn, grow, and experience the value of inclusion first-hand.
These mentorships created ripple effects throughout the workplace — supporting job seekers in exploring opportunities, while enriching the culture at Saanich. The story is a powerful reminder that when workplaces embrace inclusion, everyone benefits. Teams become stronger, more diverse, and better equipped to meet the needs of their communities.
Across the province, more and more communities are embracing inclusive employment in unique and meaningful ways. The District of Saanich is one example — and at posAbilities, we are proud to contribute to this broader movement. Our newly launched posAbilities Employment Service website provides resources and supports for both job seekers and employers. We help individuals with diverse abilities prepare for, secure, and thrive in competitive, community-based jobs. For employers, we offer guidance and training to build strong, inclusive teams that not only reflect the diversity of our communities but also drive innovation and success.
