April is World Autism Awareness Month! In the following weeks, we’ll be sharing stories about the autism experience and hopefully break down some barriers to understanding the spectrum. One artist named Rebecca Burgess has created a comic that strives to do this through a series of creative drawings, narrated by the character Archie. She explained to The Mighty in an email, “I want people to understand that autistic people don’t all fit a stereotype, and show people the consequences of stereotyping. [Stereotyping leads to] underestimating the skills of autistic people or not believing someone [who is on the spectrum].”
You can read the comic here or watch the video below to learn more. How would you describe the spectrum to someone who is unfamiliar with autism? We welcome you to share this story with your friends and family and help spread the message of understanding diversity and inclusion!
