With the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games right around the corner, the hype has already begun. The 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver were simply amazing – Canadian athletes won 10 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals! This year, the Paralympic Games will run from March 7th – 16th.   • Alpine Skiing
  • Sledge hockey
  • Biathlon
  • Cross country skiing
  • Wheelchair curling

Although this year, the Paralympics are far away in Sochi, Russia, we can still cheer on Team Canada from home! When planning out which events you want to watch, please note that Sochi is 12 hours ahead of Vancouver time. Coverage will be provided through CBC/Radio Canada, Sportsnet, Accessible Media Inc., Yahoo Canada Sports and SendtoNews. There will be over 65 hours of television broadcast and up to 350 hours of digital streaming of the Paralympic Games – much more than ever before!

Special Olympics BC Healthy Athletes Screening Day | February 15
Here in Vancouver, Special Olympics BC has put together quite the opportunity for athletes with developmental disabilities to be the healthiest they can be. On Saturday, February 15th, athletes are invited to come to the “Healthy Athletes Screening Day”. At this event, athletes can interact with each other, learn more about their health and receive a FREE health screening. To pre-register, please email Joanna at [email protected] with your full name, t-shirt size and any dietary restrictions. The event will have plenty of giveaways (including t-shirts!), educational opportunities and fun activities!

 

VASS Cup 2014 | March 13
What better way to get in the spirit of the Paralympic Winter Games than to spend a day on the slopes?

Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports (VASS) will be holding its annual fundraiser, the VASS Cup 2014, on Thursday, March 13th from 8:00am to 2:00pm at Grouse Mountain. This is a fun event for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, and you can sign up as an individual or as a team. For those who don’t ski or snowboard, there will be opportunities to try sledge hockey, participate in a fantastic banquet, enjoy some great entertainment and a spend a great day on the mountain.
