Curiosity, Comedy, and Community: Celebrating the Premiere of What’s in the Hat?: Laughing Matters

On May 8, the Social Media Fellowship rolled out the red carpet for the premiere of What’s in the Hat?: Laughing Matters at UBC Robson Square Theatre, and the evening was filled with laughter, connection, and plenty of “meaningful silliness”, as comedian and podcast guest Zach Anner calls it.

The new video podcast series was created and led by creators with disabilities through the Social Media Fellowship at posAbilities. Supported by TELUS STORYHIVE, the project brings together professors, experts, comedians, and guests to answer unexpected questions pulled from a hat.

Guests at the premiere got an exclusive first look at the series, followed by a live panel discussion, refreshments, and networking with community members, creators, and supporters. More than just a screening, the event celebrated disability-led storytelling and the importance of creating spaces where disabled voices shape the conversation.

As Hannah Nolan, Creative Lead of the Social Media Fellowship, shared in a recent interview with TELUS STORYHIVE:

“By letting people with disabilities lead the conversation, their questions, curiosity and personalities really shape the show.”

What’s in the Hat?: Laughing Matters is now streaming on TELUS Optik TV and Stream+, with a wider YouTube release coming later this summer.
