Dreaming Big: D. Armstrong’s Journey as an Autistic Comic Artist

D. Armstrong has been drawing for as long as he can remember. Inspired by Disney films and classic anime, he began sketching characters and creating stories as a child—and never stopped. Today, he’s a self-taught comic artist with a passion for imagination, originality, and perseverance.

As we spoke with D. about his journey, his enthusiasm for art shone through. “I would describe my artwork as inspirational, imaginative, compassionate, and symbolic,” he shared.

Though D. studied art history at Emily Carr University, much of his training came from outside the classroom. He took life drawing classes independently and devoted years to developing his style. For over 15 years, D. has been involved with Cloudscape Comics, a local collective of comic artists. He now teaches comic-making through various networks, encouraging new creators to stay true to their ideas and believe in themselves.

Navigating Challenges, Staying Inspired

Being an autistic artist isn’t always easy. D. spoke candidly about the challenges of staying motivated and making progress. But he has learned strategies to keep going—reminding himself to be proud of how far he has come, and staying connected to the hopes and dreams that drive him. With this belief in mind, D. takes a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to everything he draws.

One phrase guides him through it all: “If anyone can do it, so can you. My word is my bond.” It’s more than just a motto—it’s D.’s belief in the power of determination and staying true to your commitments.

Looking Ahead

D.’s dream of becoming an animator for Walt Disney continues to inspire and motivate him. It’s a goal that fuels his creativity and drives him to keep learning, growing, and working hard at his craft. This fall, we’re excited to see his work featured in the INCLUSION Art Show, happening October 22–23— a wonderful opportunity to celebrate his talent and artistic journey.

We’re grateful to D. for sharing his story with us. His dedication to his art, his passion for teaching, and his belief in the power of perseverance remind us all to dream big.
